Neuendorf House, by John Pawson, 1989 - in Maiorca, Spain
This holiday house for a German art dealer and his family is set in an almond grove with views to the sea and a backdrop of mountains.
A wall 106m long climbs the slope beside a path of elongated steps that leads to a narrow vertical gap piercing the façade. Visitors are led into a large clear atrium: an empty cube within a cube of massed walls.
Sunlight is manipulated by the thick walls and the few small deep windows positioned to frame the views of the landscape. The long narrow pool projects from the terrace towards the horizon, ending in a waterfall.
